Ballyheigue reach Nines final
BALLYHEIGUE Castle have reached the final of the Nines of Kerry Shield following a convincing 4-1 win over Ross in the semi-final last weekend.
James O’Dowd (1) & Lorraine Canty (19) beat Sean Moynihan (6) & Eileen Fleming (18) by 5/4 in the opening Mixed Foursomes and soon after Enda O’Halloran (10) & Ann Leahy (19) took the second, beating Denis Cronin (12) & Sinead O’Shea (17) by 3/2.
Maurice McElligott (11) & Nora Quinlan (17) secured the overall result taking the third game where they beat Jimmie Smith (12) & Ann O’Leary (25) by 4/2.
The Men’s fourball between Joseph O’Connor (12) & Steven Neillings (13) and Donnagh Moynihan (10) & Jonathan Casey (9) was called in as a half as was the Ladies fourball involving Kathleen Gilbride (20) & Kathleen Harty (24) halved and Lisa Kerfoot (14) & Betty O’Farrell (16).
This result means that Ballyheigue have reached the final of the Nines of Kerry Shield for the fifth time in its fifteen-year history, however they have lost in all four previous deciders, to Castlegregory (2005) and to Ardfert in 2006, 2009 and last year.
Ballyheigue’s opponents in this year’s final will be Castlegregory who beat Castlerosse a few weeks back in the other semi-final and no doubt, the North Kerry side will be all out to get their names on the trophy.
