Fossa win promotion from Division 4 following latest win

- John O’Leary

DESPITE the atrocious weather conditions, some very important back games influencing promotion and relegation issues in the Credit Union Senior Football League were played over the weekend.

DIVISION 1

THERE were no outstanding games in Division 1 where Dr Crokes have already clinched a place in the final and the second final place will be decided when Templenoe take on Austin Stacks in the final round of games.

At the other end of the table, Legion and Kenmare are relegated and Kilcummin will need both points against Glenbeigh-Glencar in the final round and hope John Mitchels slip up against Kerins O’Rahillys to avoid being the third team to go down.

DIVISION 2

AN Ghaeltacht’s victory over Listowel Emmets on Saturday last has put them into second place in the table a point behind leaders Rathmore who return to Division 1 and top the table on 15 points. St Marys are third on 13 points and Spa, who defeated Finuge in a vital back game to both sides last weekend, are just a point behind on 12.

St Marys play Emmets in Round 11 and Emmets, who are on 9 points, have a back game on Wednesday against Finuge (7:30). An Ghaeltacht are home to Spa in Gallarus in Round 11.

At the other end of Division 2, Finuge, on 5 points, have that game in hand with Emmets on this coming Wednesday evening but finish up against leaders Rathmore while Laune Rangers, beaten by Listry 10 points to 9 last week, seem to be in trouble on 6 points. The Killorglin side will have to beat Glenflesk in their final game and hope the likes of St Michaels/Foilmore (7 points) and Beaufort (8 points) do not pick up any points in Round 11.

DIVISION 3

THERE was a big upset on Sunday when leaders Currow, who needed just one point to go up as champions, were beaten by St Senans who were looking for both points in a bid to avoid relegation. Currow stay on 14 points at the top, St Pats, Annascaul and Ardfert are all on 13 points but Ardfert, who defeated Beale in a back game last week, have another back game with Brosna on Saturday next. The meeting of Annascaul and Ardfert in the final round will have a big bearing on who goes up with Currow.

At the bottom, Tarbert and Beale are already relegated. St Senans move on to 9 points with Brosna who have that game in hand with Ardfert. Ballydonoghue, Beale and Dromid, all on 10 points, are not out of the woods yet.

DIVISION 4

THE promotion issues have been sorted following two important games on Saturday. In a crunch game in Fossa, the home side, despite being a man down for over 40 minutes, held out to win by a point against promotion chasing Skellig Rangers while Ballymacelligott clinched promotion by defeating joint leaders Na Gaeil by two points. Champions of Division 3 should be decided when Fossa (20 points) play Na Gaeil (18 points) In Round 11.

At the other end of the table, Moyvane are already relegated but Valentia, on 2 points, still have a chance as they have a back game to come against Dr Crokes B this weekend and a victory there would set up a crunch relegation match in Round 11 against Churchill who are two points better off on 4 points. Renard, who are on 6 points, are not out of the woods but they play relegated Moyvane in the final round and victory for the South Kerry side in that game would see Moyvane, Valentia and Churchill go down.

DIVISION 5

CASTLEGREGORY, following a big victory over Asdee on Saturday, are already promoted as champions with 17 points but there is a real dogfight just behind them to see who takes the other two promotion places which look certain to go to playoffs. There are three teams on 14 points – Rathmore, Duagh and Tuosist who joined the race for promotion thanks to a big victory over hapless Ballyduff. Sneem-Derrynane, who moved onto 12 points with victory over Knocknagoshel, can join the other three in joint second place should they defeat Ballyduff in a back game next weekend. To make the situation even more intriguing, Rathmore play Duagh in Round 11 with the losers likely to exit the promotion race with three teams likely to finish on 16 points going on form.

The date for the final round of games depends on Kerry senior’s progress in the All Ireland championship. A Kerry victory would see the final round of games played on September 25 but if Kerry are defeated by Dublin then Round 11 will be played on Sunday, September 4.
