MASTER’S HISTORICAL WEBSITE IS LAUNCHED
THE committee of the Michael O’Donohoe Memorial Heritage Project is pleased to inform its friends and supporters that his collection is entering the world wide web.
The collection, which has been described as one of Castleisland’s and Kerry’s historical treasures, is in the process of becoming available to all with an interest in the history of Castleisland and its hinterland.
“We wish to thank you, our sponsors, for helping to make this possible. Without your help we could not have availed of grants secured from the Dept. of Arts and Culture; Kerry County Council and the Heritage Council of Ireland,” said committee chairman Johnnie Roche at the launch of the website this week.
“We especially wish to acknowledge the tremendous contribution of our archivist Janet Murphy for the last two years. She has catalogued/ recorded and digitised the collection and prepared it for uploading to the website.
“She did so with commitment, professionalism and being mindful of providing readers and researchers with leads to the original papers, publications etc.
“We wish to acknowledge the tremendous support of TJ Mahony, Heritage Officer, Kerry County Council; Jimmy Deenihan during his tenure as Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht; Cllr Bobby O’Connell; Eamonn Browne Michael Lynch and the staff of Kerry County Library; Colm Lundberg at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht; the late Mr O’Donohoe’s sister, Breda Brooks who generously loaned us the original material; Liam and Ann Courtney, Barrack Street, Castleisland; Colm Lundberg and Sharon Barry, Dept. of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Killarney; Dr Paul Dillon, UCD and Margaret O’Connor of Crageen Employment and many others.
“Recognising that not everyone has access to or is familiar with the internet we are still seeking to fund the publication of a book on the collection.
“We intend that the website, we are now supplying with historical data, will do Castleisland proud.
“We know that our community both at home and abroad will derive pleasure from logging onto and delving into the many informative articles on their own place.
“With a Facebook page at- tached we hope that the history of the area will be enhanced with comments and leads and we are encouraging people with a story to tell to engage with us on the website and Facebook page,” Mr Roche concluded.
