Kathleen was deeply immersed in the running of local church

-

ON Saturday September 10, the death occurred in St Anne’s Hospital, Cahirsiveen of Kathleen Corless (nee Murphy), who was originally of Cooil East, Valentia, and who was pre-deceased by her husband Tom of Galway.

Kathleen and Tom Corless emigrated to New Zealand, returning to live in Galway in the sixties. They returned to New Zealand in 1972 and subsequently came home on a permanent basis in 1979, eventually residing in Chapeltown (Caol), Valentia.

The church of Sts Derarca and Teresa was their neighbouring place of worship in Chapeltown and Kathleen took full advantage of this, becoming deeply immersed in the day to day running of church affairs, in keeping with the tradition of her late uncle Johnny ’Mund’ Murphy, who was for many years the parish clerk.

The Requiem funeral services were celebrated by Fr Larry Kelly PP. of Cahirsiveen and the former Parish Priest of Valentia Island, Fr John Shanahan, who was in attendance on invitation.

During the course of the requiem ceremony, Fr Shanahan outlined his memories of the good church work performed by Kathleen during his time in Valentia.

Due to failing health, she left Valentia to live with her daughter Brenda and husband Martin and children in Killoe near Cahirsiveen, being sorely missed as a church worker and good neighbour in that close knit small village in the centre of Valentia Island.

However, she spent another eleven contented years in the comfort and care of her family in Killoe.

Sincere condolences are offered to her daughter Brenda, son-in-law Martin, grandchildren Lorraine and Deirdre, sister Gertie (New Zealand) and all others concerned.Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a hanam.
