Pupils take on teachers at Spa NS health and fitness day

-

THE importance of healthy lifestyle choices was the main lesson at Spa NS on Friday as the school hosted its annual ‘Health and Fitness’ day.

As part of the school’s participation in the European Week of Sport and in association with National Fitness Day, a wide variety of activities were organised for everyone to enjoy.

The students took part in a lively aerobic and dance session in the morning and each class tried their hand at the ‘Climb a mountain’ skipping challenge.

Niamh Murphy from Tralee Triathlon Club put everyone through their paces in a workshop explaining the disciplines involved in a triathlon and the students got some chill out time during their mindfulness classes.

A number of health professionals and local gardaí including Kerry GAA player Aidan O’Mahony visited the school and gave presentations to the classes.

The highlight of the day was the ‘Teachers v Students’ contest in the afternoon when the staff took on the 6th class students in a number of different challenges including five a side soccer; a basketball shoot out; spikeball and boccia. This was a hectic contest with both teams giving their all.

However, everyone seemed happy when former principal and official referee Tom Crowley blew the final whistle and declared it a draw.

Health Co-ordinator, Mrs Griffin Crowe was delighted with the day. “It was a great success. The students really seemed to enjoy the different activities and presentations. They are very knowledgeable and are leading the way,” she said.
