Brick returns to be the rock on which Kilmoyley build win

- BY TIMMY SHEEHAN

MAN of the Match Shane Brick was understandably overjoyed at winning his seven SHC medal, especially as he hadn’t hurled with Kilmoyley for a few seasons since transferring to Cork where he works as a schoolteacher.

The spotlight was firmly on him since he announced his return a few weeks ago and having made a significant contribution to the success he was simply delighted for a club that he has served with such distinction.

“Unbelievable, I suppose the last day was a fierce battle, today was a fierce battle, just delighted to come out on the right side of it. A lot of respect there for Ballyduff, they really put it up to us over the two games, as we knew they would. There’s a great rivalry there but a great respect as well and, look, we are just delighted we are Champions.”

In terms of preparing for the replay, “We just completely concentrated on ourselves. We didn’t do a whole pile in training other than sharpen up. We got a few lads in just to work on a few little bits, forwards and the backs, just tidied up a few bits. It was all about getting the head right for today, and I think we hurled well as a team from the ’keeper out. Everybody who came in was tuned in, hurled well.”

Brick was quick to pay tribute to his fellow attackers and the significant scoring spread.

“Fantastic, Maurice O’Connor came in there, he was super in the corner, showed great mental strength, because the first couple of balls got away from him, he really was a thorn in their side all day, and, as you say if all six forwards score from play, and, I think one of the lads scored from midfield as well, so, with a good spread of scorers you always have a great chance. A bit of a nervy finish, but, you wouldn’t expect anything different from Ballyduff, they were always going to put it up to you until the final whistle, so, we are absolutely just over the moon that we came out the other side of it.”
