East Kerry wins for Glenflesk, Spa and Rathmore

O’DONOGHUE CUP SFC FIRST ROUND Glenflesk 4-15 Kilcummin 0-9

IN an great team performanc­e, at home against Kilcummin, Glenflesk qualified for the O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final. The sides traded two points apiece in the opening quarter before Glenflesk began to dominate the middle of the field, and pulled ahead with a brace of points and a Dara Roche goal, provided by Lee O’Donoghue in the 19th minute. Four Glenflesk points to one for Kilcummin left the half time score Glenflesk 1-8 Kilcummin 0-3.

Glenflesk continued to dominate in the second half. Four Glenflesk points to three for Kilcummin kept the scoreboard ticking over. Then, with 18 minutes remaining, Lee O’Donoghue made a surging run, rounded his man and went through for a fantastic goal. Glenflesk led 2-12 to 0-6, a commanding position they did not relinquish. Kilcummin pushed forward, but the Glenflesk defence was strong held the visitors to 3 points.

In the final quarter, Glenflesk added two goals, the first from Jeff, provided by Lee, the second a Lee O’Donoghue converted penalty. Glenflesk are at home to Gneeveguil­la on October 8 in the quarter-final.

Spa 0-14 Scartaglen 1-6

SPA progress to the quarter final after an entertaini­ng fast moving game against Scartaglen. Played in wet windy conditions, Spa led 0-6 to 0-1 on the 28th minute, notching up some great points from distance and difficult angles. A move started by Padraig Reidy, led to a Scartaglen goal scoring opportunit­y and the visitors were awarded a penalty. Scartaglen’s Daniel Murphy ably dispatched the penalty, reducing the margin to two points 0-6 to 1-1, on the 30th minute. In the final passage of play, Spa pointed a free. Score at the break was Spa 0-7 Scartaglen 1-1

The sides swapped two points each in the third quarter, 0-9 to 1-3 with 43 minutes played. However, 5 points from Spa to 3 for Scartalgen gave the home side a 5 point victory. Spa are away to Legion in the quarter-final on October 8.

O’DONOGHUE CUP SFC QUARTER-FINAL Rathmore 3-13 Currow 3-6

CURROW hosted 2015 champions Rathmore in the O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final. The visitors made the early running, kicking two pointed frees before Currow opened their account with a point from play. The visitors went on to notch up six points to two for the home side. Score at the break was Rathmore 0-8 Currrow 0-3.

On resumption, Currow pointed a free and the sides exchanged goals. Good attacking Rathmore play led to a penalty, slotted home by Mark Reen. Currow quickly replied. Daniel O’Shea caught a high ball, rounded a defender and slotted a goal past Rathmore keeper. Rathmore then enjoyed a good period scoring a fine goal when Eoin Lawlor finished to the net after a pass from John Moynihan. Two pointed frees gave Rathmore a nine-point lead.

However, Currow were never going to lie down. Daniel O’Shea, who caused the Rathmore defence problems around the square, goaled from another long high delivery. As play went from end to end, Colm Kelly calmy found the net, on the end of a swift Rathmore attack. The sides pointed and Currow midfielder Timmy O’Leary goaled, flicking a high ball to the Rathmore net.

The Man of the Match award was presented to Rathmore’s Mark Reen.

EAST REGION SENIOR LEAGUE DIV 2 FINAL Fossa 0-13 Firies 1-7

FOSSA won the division 2 East Region Senior League Division 2 Final in a sporting game against Firies that was in the melting pot until the final whistle. Played in wet conditions, that were difficult for scoring, it was an end to end affair in the opening half, with both sides defending well and the sides trading points. Fossa led by the minimum, 0-7 to 0-6 as the break approached, when Jack Sherwood put Firies two points ahead with a well worked goal. Score at the break was Firies 1-6 Fossa 0-7.

On resumption, Fossa equalised with 2 points from play, and the sides traded points – 0-10 to 1-7 seven minutes into the half. Although Firies continued to press forward, creating scoring opportunit­ies, Fossa defended well and Dan O’Keeffe denied Firies a goal opportunit­y on the 50th minute, with a great intercepti­on in the square.

Fossa notched up three points in the last quarter to run out winners.

EK U-14 CHAMPIONSH­IP DIVISION 1 FINAL Killarney Legion 5-15 Rathmore 3-12

Played in ideal conditions at Fitzgerald Stadium the opening half was a finely balanced affair. The sides traded points before Niall McGillicud­dy breached the Rathmore defence, after a great run, and scored a great goal.

There were a scatter of points before Aaron Cronin goaled for Rathmore, with midfielder Alan Dineen , who had been moved tothe edge of the square, heavily involved in plays leading to the goal. Half time score Killarney Legion 1-7 Rathmore 1-5.

The second half began as the first ended with Alan Dineen causing problems for the Legion defence, catching a high ball over his head and dispatchin­g to the Legion net. Rathmore added a number of points. Legion enjoyed more possession, notching up points before Ryan O’Grady sent a bullet of a shot to the Rathmore net on the 41st minute, to lead by 2 points. Rathmore equalised going into the last ten minutes. The sides swapped points.

Excitement was reaching fever pitch as Alan Dineen fielded a high ball over his head and finished to the net. Legion counter-attacked immediatel­y and William Shine goaled brilliantl­y. Legion then pressed high up on the Rathmore kick out and this paid dividends.

After a Legion point, Christian Casey came forward from wing back to score a great goal. A brace of points was followed with a great goal, when Legion full forward Ryan O’Grady won a ball and sent a missile to the net from all of 20 metres out. This stretched the winning margin for a very impressive Legion team. A brave Rathmore side, gave their all and battled to the end, losing little in defeat.
