Killorglin unbeaten after three

-

THIS game was between two sides that have serious aspirations of getting to the league final and it was Killorglin that took the spoils after a closely contested game that provided very good entertainment.

It looked for a while in the second half as it would end all square but Killorglin came with a late flurry to capture the three points which leaves them with maximum points after three games.

Classic had the first serious ef- fort on goals with a David Courtney shot saved by the Killorglin keeper Jason Browne.

Then Killorglin put a great move together involving several players and the effort on goals by Paul McKenna was blocked on the line.

David Courtney and Jonathan Loughnane had a couple of chances for Classic but their efforts on goals were at the Killorglin keeper.

The deadlock was broken by Killorglin in the 25th minute with a blockbuster of a goal. Lee Carey was instrumental in the build up to the score making a great run down the right touch line. When his cross was blocked out it fell to Jacko Breen and from 35 yards he let fly with a screamer of a shot which curled right into the top corner of the net for a goal of sensational quality.

Then Classic put a couple of promising attacks together but Shane Fitzgerald’s shot was blocked while an effort from Max Mugabe went over the top.

Then it looked as if Mike Carey was going to score for Killorglin when he was played in with a great cross-field ball but just as he was about to pull the trigger he was denied by a superb tackle by Jonathan Loughnane.

Just before the break Classic got a free kick on the verge of the box but David Courtney put his effort high and over the top.

The game was turned on its head three minutes into the second half when Classic equalised. A free by Brendan Sweeney out on the sideline broke out to Dominic Houlihan who set up Brendn Smyth and he drilled a powerful low shot which went all the way to the net.

Just past the hour mark Killorglin got a free kick close in but Lee Carey’s effort on goals was brilliantly saved by the Classic goalie Pa Bailey.

Then Killorglin manager Con Lucey made an inspired substitution with the introduction of David Coffey and with his first touch of the ball he set up Sean Costello and the wily old fox who always has an eye for finding the net sized up his options on the edge of the box and put the ball well wide of the advancing keeper and into the unguarded net.

Six minutes later it was game set and match for Killorglin when they scored a stunner of a third goal. Brendan Breen was bundled over by Max Mugabe right of the line of the box. The free kick was struck majestically with his left peg by Lee Carey getting the ball around the wall and it bent just inside the far post for a goal of utter brilliance.

To their credit Classic kept their heads up and inspired by Brendan

Sweeney they were still putting some attacks together but they yielded nothing.

By now Killorglin were slowing down the pace of the game to their own liking and ran out comfortable winners at the end.
