- By SIMON BROUDER

THEY say you should always make the most of it when the weather’s good and that’s just what two Tralee schools did last week.

Though heavy rain put paid to their plans last Thursday on Friday morning the pupils of Mercy Moyderwell and Tralee Educate Together put down their pencils and put on their walking boots as part of European Mobility week.

The Mercy Moyderwell pupils held their “Walk a mile with a smile” event at Tralee Town Park while the Tralee Educate Together pupils took a walk in the lush woodlands that surround their school at Collis Sandes House.

Both events were organised in conjunction with the Tralee Active Travel programme and Kerry County Council as part of European Mobility Week.

The aim of the week and the Tralee programme is to highlight the importance of physical activity in our everyday lives and also to promote walking or cycling as an alternative form of transport to our cars for everyday journeys.

Over 100 pupils and staff from Mercy Moyderwell took part in the event in the park with the youngsters also using the opportunity to collect fallen leaves and chestnuts for their classroom nature tables. After the walk it was back to the school for an exciting school raffle with the top prize a brand new bike.

After their walk in the woods the Tralee Educate Together pupils also enjoyed a raffle and their too the top prize was also a span new bike.

“The walk was a super success to encourage physical activity and demonstrated our inclusive ethos where parents, teachers and pupils work together to promote all aspects of the curriculum,” said T.E.T Principal Mary Brosnan.
