Over 300 take part in Killarney 10-mile road

- Tessa Dennison

THE third Killarney 10-mile fundraising road race took place last Saturday and with just over 300 entered much needed funds were raised towards the provision of a new micro-track and sports facilities in Killarney. With a yellow weather warning issued the previous evening it didn’t deter athletes from all over Ireland, USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Mexico and Chile joining local runners to enjoy a classic race which took in Aghadoe and the Killarney National Park before finishing at St. Brendan’s College.

The winner of the event this year was Phillip Harty of West Waterford AC in a solid time of 53:51. Phillip has already won the Cork City Marathon, Waterford Marathon and the Limerick Half Marathon this year. Close on his heels were Sean O’Sullivan (An Riocht) and Tony Harty (Killarney Valley).

First lady across the line was Deirdre Nagle of Eagle AC in 1:08:43, battling through the early difficult conditions very well. In second place was Alison Kirwan (Star of the Laune) and third lady was Catriona Barry (Farranfore Maine Valley). The greatest individual achievements came from the Killarney Valley AC ‘Fit for Life’ group who completed the 10 mile distance for the very first time. One other notable achievement was Geraldine Clifford, wife of the late Richard Clifford, to whom the winners cup is dedicated, who also completed 10 miles for the first time running alongside her daughter Ashling.
