Thousands take on epic quest in Killarney
KILLARNEY was the epicentre of activity last weekend as almost 2,500 daring and hardy souls converged for the annual ‘Quest Killarney’ contest. Billed as one of the world’s largest adventure races, it’s hard to argue with this assertion given the arduous trekking through some of the county’s most beautiful spots.
With five destinations incorporating distances of 70km and 60km routes – as well as a 27km Sport Event – participants enjoyed the scenic climbs on the MacGillycuddy Reeks, Mangerton Mountain, Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley, with routes through Killarney National Park and kayaking on Muckross Lake.
Dessie Duffy was the winner of the 70km ‘Expert Race’ in a hugely impressive time of 3hrs and 42mins, while Moira O’Sullivan won the Ladies 70km race in an equally impressive 4hrs and 14mins.
Since its inception over five years ago, Killarney Quest continues to build on its solid reputation which was bolstered in 2014 when it was voted ‘Best Outdoor Event’ by Outsider magazine.
The race nowadays attracts thousands to Killarney from all over Ireland and further afield, creating an important end of season boost for the town’s economy, a far cry from the 500 strong field that took park when it first started.
“The October weather was perfect for this Epic and mammoth Adventure Race, Killarney is truly the only location in the world that can accommodate such a race,” said Oliver Kirwan, event organiser with Elite Event Management.
“What makes it special is the camaraderie after the race, competitors and spectators enjoy the festival-like atmosphere, music, food, kid’s adventure race and after party in The Gleneagle.”
Mr Kirwan also extended his praise to the hardworking and dedicated team of staff, volunteers, marshals and stewards who make the event a reality.
