Killorglin and Tralee to contest Dr Billy O’Sullivan Shield final

-

KILLORGLIN and Tralee will take on each other on Saturday week to see where the Dr Billy O’Sullivan Shield will reside for the winter after they came through their respective semi-finals last Friday.

Played on Mahony’s Point, Killarney, Killorglin and Ceann Sibeal were first into action with Killorglin coming through on a 3/2 scoreline. With Killorglin’s number 1 and 3 matches losing and their number 4 and 5 matches winning, everything depended on the second match. Ceann Sibéal looked like winners when they went dormie 5, but the never-say-die spirit of Donie Evans and Sean McCarthy saw Killorglin fight back to win the last five holes, halve the 19th and win the match and the overall contest for manager Aidan Spillane on the 20th. (Killorglin names first) Pat Sheahan (19)/ Bernie Coffey (20) lost to Denis Winters (19)/Paddy Duggan (21) 2/1 Donie Evans (18)/Sean McCarthy (23) beat Seán Ruiséal (21)/Alan Flannery (19) 20th Brendan Murray (19)/Bernard Doyle (24) lost to Bosco Fitzgerald (26)/Gary Par tington (18) 6/5 Padraig Dolan (19)/Jimmy Foley (20) beat Michael O’Connor (18)/Des Ball (21) 4/3 Pat Goulding (18)/Shane Roche (21) beat Joe O’Sullivan (20)/ Frank Greaney (19) 3/2

The second semi-final, also on Mahony’s Point, saw Tralee take on Castleisland with the men from Barrow coming through on a 3.5/1.5 winning margin. This match was closer than the final score suggests. With comfortable wins at number 4 and 5, but a loss in match 3, Tralee manager Pat O’Meara’s team needed one more win. The first game out was close with the Tralee pair taking a one-hole lead to the lakeside 17th. When Castleisland got into trouble on the lake shore, Tralee clinched the match and the overall result with a steady par. (Tralee names first) Mike Galvin (19)/Kieran O’Callaghan (20) beat Willie Galvin (20)/Willie O’Leary (19) 3/1 John P. Enright (19)/Richard Barrett (22) halved with Donie O’Shea (19)/Owen Nolan (21) Called in Eamon Fitzgerald (18)/John O’Connell (21) lost to Jim Crowley (18)/Con Murphy (23) 4/3 Kieran Ruttledge (18)/Dave Tarrant (21) beat Cyril Quigley (21)/Sean Hickey (18) 8/6 John O’Driscoll (18)/Paddy O’Donoghue (21) beat Mike O’Connor (25)/ Patsy Sweeney (18) 6/5 The final between Killorglin and Tralee takes place on Mahony’s Point on Saturday, 15 October at 10am.
