DEATH

John Healy, St Garvan’s Terrace, Kilgarvan and formerly London and Shandrum, Kilgarvan passed away on Friday 23rd September 2016.

John’s Funeral Mass took place on Tuesday 27th September at 12 noon at St Patrick’s Church, Kilgarvan, with burial afterwards in the local Cemetery.

To his children Tina, Kieran and Alex, sisters Anna, Maureen and Patricia, brother Benny, nephews, nieces and all the Healy Family we extend our deepest Sympathy.

CROSS COUNTRY

The annual greater Kenmare district National School Cross Country competitio­n took place on Friday 23rd September at the sports field Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine, Kenmare. Again the event proved to be an outstandin­g success thanks to the nine schools that took part, to their teachers, coaches and parents who prepared them for the event plus the many people who prepared the course for the event, stewards and those who organised the medal and trophy presentati­on. This competitio­n is very much an introducto­ry experience for many of the children as this is their first time competing in a cross country race. Thereafter many of them join Kenmare Athletic Club which is the most successful underage cross country club in the County. This event is unique in that participan­ts compete via their school class. It is also a class team event.

The following schools competed, St John’s Kenmare, Cahir, Realt na Mara Tuosist, Tahilla, Lauragh, Kilgarvan, Black Valley, Bonane and Sneem. Kilgarvan athletes did very well.

Timothy O’Donoghue, Ards won the 6th Class Boys race. In the 5th Class Boys Jimmy Kelleher was 3rd and Denis Twomey was 5th. Kayla Dineen won the 4th Class Girls race and Alex McCarthy came 3rd.In the 4th Class Boys Kieran O’Donoghue placed 2nd and in 4th place was Cathal Kelleher. Maggie O’Donoghue, Clontoo placed 6th in the 3rd Class Girls and her sister Ellen was 2nd in the 1st Class Girls both for Cahir School. Seamus O’Donoghue placed 4th in the 2nd Class Boys and Colum Kelleher was in 13th place. Thomas O’Reilly placed 6th in the 4th Class Boys. The Junior Infant Boys race was won by John Quill, Church St. Kilgarvan. Heather Randles and Sinead O’Reilly also participat­ed in this Schools event.

Cahir National School won the overall trophy with a total of 7 team wins. St John’s, Kenmare were 2nd with 5, Kilgarvan won 2 team events with a trophy for 6th Class Boys and Junior Infant Boys, while Realt na Mara, Tuosist and Sneem won 1 team event each.

COLLECTION

The Annual Burial Ground collection was taken up at the weekend Masses of September 24th and 25th. The amount collected was €495.89. Thanks to all contribute­d and to the following who helped out with the collection: Mary Theresa Kelleher, Michael Murphy, Dermot (Curly) Dineen, Patsie Dineen, John O’Donoghue, Tadgh O’Donoghue, Tim Shine, John Creedon (Lomanagh) and Peter A. O’Sullivan.

TIDY TOWNS

Congratula­tions to Kilgarvan Tidy Towns for continuing to improve in their Category A - the smallest population category in the 2016 Super Valu Tidy Town’s Completion. The results were announced on Monday 26th September and Kilgarvan gained a further 5 points bringing their total to 240. Well done to all who worked so hard during the Summer to keep our village looking great.

Special Congratula­tions to the youngest member of Kilgarvan Tidy Towns, Mary Ellen McCarthy, Coomcloghe­rane, Kilgarvan who was honoured Nationally by receiving a Junior Community Hero Award. Mary Ellen, daughter of Mary and Sylvie McCarthy is just 13 years old and attends Pobal Scoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare. She was nominated by Eileen Finnegan and Tommy Randles both from Kilgarvan Tidy Towns for her hard work and dedication. She was always eager to come each week to help with the painting, cleaning, watering flowers etc. Mary Ellen, her mother Mary who also volunteers with Kilgarvan Tidy Towns and Eileen Finnegan travelled to Dublin with Derry Murphy of Murphy’s Super Valu, Kenmare to collect her award. Mary Ellen is very proud of how good her village Kilgarvan looks.

GROW

PLAY

A 1916 Story at the INEC Killarney on Thursday 27th October 2016. This is a Story of Captain Patrick O’Connor by Aidan O’Connor. A two-hour musical drama that recalls the final months of Patrick O’Connor’s life, an Irish Volunteer from Rathmore who fought and died in the Easter Rising, 1916. Having buried his father and brother the week before he joined Patrick Pearse and his comrades to fight inside the GPO, ‘Patrick’ is a story of patriotism, love and loss that is brought to life by moving renditions of classic Irish songs such as ‘Mo Ghile Mear’, ‘Roisín Dubh’ and ‘Grace’.
