500 tackle Killarney women’s mini marathon

IT WAS that time of year again in Killarney as over 500 women – along with some very brave men all dressed to the nines in curly wigs and flowing dresses – descended upon the popular tourist town to take part in the of the hugely popular Dawn Milk Killarney Women’s Mini-Marathon.

The race which offered a 5km and 10km route kicked off at 11am at Missionary Road where runners took in the scenic sights of the Cathedral before switching to Killarney National Park alongside the lakeside shore of Lough Leane.

The title of fastest home on the day went to the lightning quick Deidre Harrington from Bantry in a time of 44:22 with fellow Cork runner Geraldine O’ Shea romping home seconds later in second place and Ballyheigu­e’s own Margaret Carlin of St Brendan’s AC in Ballyheigu­e home in third place.

An event that continues to grow in popularity year on year, the run has become firm staple in the social calendar in the town and has managed to raise tens of thousands of Euros for charity since its inception.

“We’re very happy with how the day went, we had over 500 who took part which is absolutely fantastic and we think that had everyone had a good time, which of course is the main thing,” said race organiser Catríona Kelly.

The mental health charity, Jigsaw Kerry were one of the main benefactor­s from this years run as runners from Tralee and all over Kerry joined together to raise vital funds for the service.
