The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Iveragh Symposium will bring nature to life in south kerry
A ‘FUN and exciting weekend’ is set for Southwest Kerry between October 14 and 16, as the Iveragh Learning Landscapes Symposium brings its brand of talks and workshops to the region.
The exercises, organised by IRD Waterville, and Sea Synergy Marine Awareness and Activity Centre (SSMAAC), focus on outdoor education, place-based learning and nature connection.
Lucy Hunt, founder and Managing Director of SSMAAC, describes the event as ‘a chance to network with leading environmental educators from across the globe in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.’
“It’s the first running of this event and we’ll have a great range of unique workshops,” Lucy explains.
“We’ll have ‘Seaweed Discovery’, ‘Sand Dune Ecology’ a herbal medicine workshop, family yoga, and ‘nature art,’ amongst many other things.
“I’ll also have my own workshop, ‘Supporting Children Learning in the Outdoors’ with Karin Bacon, so there’ ll be lots going on, and there’s something for anyone interested in the environment and heritage of Iveragh.”
Friday evening presentations start off in Caherdaniel, with talks from leading experts on outdoor learning like Anders Szczepanski from Sweden’s Linkoping University, and representatives of Irish organisations like the ‘Burrenbeo Trust’ and ‘Leave No Trace’, before another array of workshops gets underway on Saturday and Sunday.
A weekend ticket for the events in Waterville and Caherdaniel costs €20, and you can register online at eventbrite.ie.
