Dowling claims Mulvaney

-

WE said last week that, with Liam Dowling behind him, College Paradise had a great chance of landing the pot of €7,500 in the final of the Mulvaney Memorial 600 Sweepstake at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night and he duly did so – at odds of 5/1 at that.

Just four went to traps and it looked as if the Owen McKenna trained Farloe Joe had to win turning for home, with College Paradise hampered by Newlawn Simon behind him, but College Paradise made a quite remarkable recovery and got up in the shadow of the post for a marvellous head victory over Farloe Joey in 32.64.

Completing a great night for Liam Dowling was the victory of Ballymac Belle in the final of a €4,000-to-the-winner open bitch sweepstake at Curraheen Park. Ballymac Belle won by half a length from Boxer Lady in 28.58, with another Liam Dowling finalist, Ballymac Scala, back in fifth place.

In the second round of the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick, Lenson Rocky produced another brilliant winning performance and, happily, he continues to be a great adver tisement for Tralee Track and the GMHD juvenile classic. ONE performance stood out in a big way at last week’s Tuesday meeting at Tralee Track and it was the 28.63 recorded by Bolus Pete in the ninth race (A1 525).

Jointly owned by Flor O’Shea and Kevin Hannafin, Bolus Pete was something of an outsider at 4/1, but he was always in control after leading off the first bend from a trap 4 draw and he sailed home three lengths ahead of Fermoyle Daithi, to make it a terrific 1-2 for South Kerry.

It was a tenth victory from 36 star ts for Bolus Pete (he has been placed 21 times) and it was most definitely his sweetest – and fastest.

Other winners: Manhattan Steve, 18.24; Steeple Rd Chris, 29.09; Coisceim Beag, 29.49; Send It Puffin, 17.88; Knock Mystery, 29.23; Risies Rambler, 29.45; Coolboy Bob, 18.10; Baltovin Rumble, 29.23; Adamswood Melody, 29.27. A REMINDER about the Kerry GOBA meeting at Tralee Track this Thursday night (8.00). Impor tant items are on the agenda and it goes without saying that it is in the interest of Kerry owners and breeders to attend.

Among those items are: track surface, Infield shelter cages and concrete base; benefit nights and prizemoney; infield tote display; kennel area; trials. Good material there for lively discussion. THE Ballyheigue and District coursing meeting takes place this weekend and Pat McElligott and Co will ensure that the fare is of a high standard. Abbeydorney follows on October 22 and 23.
