CHILDCARE CENTRE AGM

The Centre’s AGM was held on Tuesday 4th of October , we were delighted with the attendance at it. Our Committee Members for this year are as follows:

Once again thanks to our existing members for signing up again and we would like to welcome our new members on board.

Scartaglin N.S Parents Council Committee wish to thank all who supported their big Bingo fundraisin­g night held recently in Castleisla­nd Community Centre. Thanks to the parents and teachers who attended. Thanks to those who bought books, and tickets for the spot prizes. A special word of thanks to the generous sponsors of spot prizes on the night, to Therese Mahony for her wonderful help, support and cooperatio­n in staging the event and the committee of Castleisla­nd Community Centre. The Parents Council Committee were very pleased with the overall response to this fundraiser, so thanks to one and all for your support. Next event coming up is the Halloween Disco -- more details about that later.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglin GAA Club’s early October Lotto Draw took place in Flemings Bar on Sunday night October 2nd . The Jackpot was €6,400 and was not won. Numbers drawn were: 11, 18, 22, 24. Prizewinne­rs in the =93Lucky Dip=94 Draw were as follows: €40 -- Adrian Murphy, No 7 Cnoc Na Rún, Scartaglin. €30 each to - Adrian Fleming, Ballahanto­urig. William Curtain c/o Pat Kerins. €20 each to -- Amy Pryal, Dromulton. The Dicker Family, Raheen, Firies. Sean O’ Connor, Coolnagera­gh.

MOBILE LIBRARY

The mobile library’s next visit to Scartaglin will be on this Thursday, October 13th from 9.45 to 10.15am. Now that the long evenings are slipping away and the nights are getting darker, demand for books and videos will be increasing once again and this service is free.

CANCER COLLECTION

The Irish Cancer Society would like to thank all who contribute­d to their Annual Church gate collection held in Scartaglin last week and a word of thanks also to those who helped to take up the collection. The amount collected was €345.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION

The Church gate collection this weekend is the Diocesan Collection in aid of Propagatio­n of the Faith.

AFTERNOON OF PRAYER

The next Afternoon of Prayer in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Scartaglin will be on this Sunday October 16thth when Janice and Moss Carrig will be present. The Rosary will start the prayer afternoon as always at 2.30pm and everyone is welcome.

HERITAGE CENTRE AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Committee of Scartaglin Heritage Centre took place in the Centre on Tuesday night October 4th. The following officers were elected for 2016/2017. Chairman -- John Walsh Secretary -- Eilish Moynihan Asst Sec - Alan O’ Connell Treasurer -- Sheila McSweeney Asst Treasurer -- Nora Walsh

PARENTING COURSE

If sufficient people are interested, a Parenting Course hosted by Joan Barrett will be held in the Heritage Centre for 8 weeks for 2 hours a week. For further details and enquiries, contact Juliann on 087 9126184 or Sheila at 087 6325163.

HANDED DOWN

The first Handed Down of this season kicks off at 8pm sharp in the Heritage Centre Scartaglin on Sat Oct 22. Presented by master musician Paudie O Connor whose father was a Ballinthou­rig man and mother from Kilsarcon . Paudie will take a look at the life ,music and story of the great fiddle player ,the late Jerry McCarthy from Gortglass . There is video footage and rare recordings made in Cordal in 1969. Paudie will also play on the night with his wife Aoife Ni Chaoimh and his daughter Roisin on fiddle who will make her first musical visit to Scartaglin .

Our young musicians are James O Mahony on fiddle who is a grandson of Jerry McCarthy and Bronagh and Shane Browne on fiddle and box who are grandchild­ren of the late Dan Jerimiah O Connor of Scartaglin Special guest is Aidan Connolly of Dublin whose mother Eileen and Uncle Con Moynihan are Gneeegulla natives and former pupils of Nicky McAulliffe . Aidan is coming to Scartaglin to showcase music from his new CD prior to it’s launch at Brownes Bar on Sat evening of the Patrick O Keeffe festival . Some of the tracks on the CD have Scartaglin connection­s and the CD will be available to purchase on the night .
