Community College pupils givesurplusDebs money to charity
It is, probably, a sign of the success of the student organising committee of Friday night’s Castleisland Community College debs ball that they had a surplus of €800. It is certainly a sign of their altruism that their first thoughts fell on local charities as being worthy recipients of that surplus.
“This year’s Castleisland Community College Debs seemed like a most horrendous task to take on at the outset. However, the debs committee worked as a team to make it an enjoyable experience,” said organising committee spokesperson, Saoirse Casey
“We realised early on that we would have money left over from the event and we decided to donate it to charity. We considered it a much more worthy cause than lining our own pockets.”
“It was really important to me and the committee to donate to a physical and a mental illness charitiy as we feel they should be supported every way possible.
“We divided our surplus in two and decided that Pieta House would get €400. It’s a fantastic facility for those in need, a place that makes you feel at home.
“We also donated €400 to the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus. Cancer affects every town and village worldwide and €400 isn’t much but it might make a difference,” said Saoirse.
A group of 230 students attended the college debs ball at the Earl of Desmond Hotel on Friday evening.
“Everything went smoothly and we all enjoyed the night and there was no catastrophe – thank God,” said Saoirse on behalf of her fellow altruistic debs and dates.
Breda Dyland, Kerry Cancer Support Group / Kerry Cork Health Link Bus represented the charity at the smoothly organised cheque presentation ceremony before the event got under way on Friday evening.
Expressing her thanks for the thoughtfulness of the students Ms. Dyland said the service, wonderful and all it is as an asset to the county, would not be on the road at all but for the donations from groups like the students.
“We are on the road five days a week and it gives us great heart and support to see the young people of the county supporting us and thinking of us when making donations like this,” Ms. Dyland said.
There was no representative from Pieta House there on the occasion.
