The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
South Kerry dancers are strictly fantastic
A FULL house greeted Piarsaigh na Dromoda’s answer to Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday, as the club officers, members and players alike produced a spectacular night’s entertainment at the Sealodge Hotel in Waterville.
Representatives from several South Kerry clubs called in for the night to support their neighbours, lending a competitive edge and a sense of craic to proceedings.
Radio Kerry’s Ger O’Connor took to his role as master of ceremonies seamlessly, adding what was described as ‘a very professional tone’ to the evening’s elegant events.
The night’s quality was further enhanced by a superb band of judges made up of Councillors Toireasa Ferris and Norma Moriarty, as well as Kerry legend Declan O’Sullivan. The trio provided plenty comical banter throughout the night, but all the while kept a stern eye over the contestants’ footwork.
For all that, the stars of the show were the dancers themselves. They provided quality entertainment for all in attendance, and it was roundly agreed that the efforts of each couple - all under the tutelage of Lorraine Andrews - could clearly be seen at show-time.
But there has to be winners. The judges picked out Paula Brennan and Mike O’Shea as the standous, but the public thought differently as they voted instead for Padraig Jackie O’Sullivan and Cathy O’Sullivan.
Whatever your opinion on who deserved the crowns and tiaras, two things were more definite: the funds raised will do Piarsaigh na Dromoda GAA club the power of good, while the night itself was one that’ll be remembered in South Kerry for years to come.
If you want to relive the night, there’s good news. Christy Riordan filmed proceedings, and you can purchase a DVD of the evening for €10. You can get your hands on a copy by contacting Piarsaigh na Dromoda’s Committee, or Christy himself at (087) 9226284.
