Art appreciation course to take a close look at famed Díseart windows
THE Harry Clarke stained glass windows in An Díseart, which are gaining increased national and international attention as important works of art, will be at the centre of an art appreciation course starting in An Díseart next week.
The course, which is being delivered by Brenda Ní Shuilleabháin from Baile ’n Liaigh, Ventry, aims to give particants a deeper understanding of Irish art generally and in particular the work of stained glass artist Harry Clarke, whose windows in the chapel of An Díseart attract thousands of views during the summer.
Brenda, who holds Masters in Art History, will deliver the course over three consecutive Thursday evenings, starting on November 10.
Meanwhile, An Díseart had a visit recently from two of Harry Clarke’s grand-daughters who dropped in to see the windows he was commissioned to make by Sister Ita Macken in 1922 at a cost of £1,000.
The windows in An Diseart are among Harry Clarke’s most celebrated work, which also includes the nine windows he created for the Honan Chapel at Cork University, the Eve of St. Agnes at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin, the set of decorative windows at Bewley’s cafe in Dublin, and the Geneva window which is now at the Wolfsonian in Miama, Florida.
