Moyvane, Listowel and Killarney enjoy Knockout Cup victories

KERRY senior badminton held the Knockout Cup competitio­n in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre On Sunday for divisions 3, 4 and 5 with 13 teams taking part.

Three teams took part in division 3, Moyvane, Kingdom (Castleisla­nd) and Killarney, playing a round robin format. Moyvane won on 8 points, Kingdom were second on 5 points with Killarney third on 5 points, losing out on sets. The Moyvane team was William Flaherty, Jamie Elliott, Chris McCarthy, Timmy Griffin, Fran Collins, Jeanelle Griffin, Carmel Hudson and Amanda Carmody. The Kingdom team consisted of Kevin Keane, Tom Clear, Jebin John, Brendan McGovern, Maggie Prendivill­e, Renee Lenihan, Michelle Beazley and Claire Cahill.

Seven teams took part in division 4 and were divided into two groups. Moyvane, Kingdom, Annascaul and Iveragh played each other in 1 group with Moyvane coming out on top.

In the second group Listowel, Causeway and Killarney played each other and Listowel qualified for the final against Moyvane. In the Division 4 final Listowel took the honours on a score of 5-1

The winning Listowel team included Anthony Barrett, Paul Hayes, Mike Moloney, James Sheahan, Rita McCarthy, Lucy Guiney, Margaret Healy and Bernie Rowe. Moyvane team were Timmy Flaherty, John Newman, Liam O’Connor, Micheal Collins, Denise Collins, Eleanor Sheehan, Michelle Corridan and Ciara Hudson.

Moyvane, Kingdom and Killarney took part in division 5, playing each other; Killarney won winners on 7 points with Moyvane second on 6 points and Kingdom third with 5. The winning Killarney team was Daniel O’Connor, Paul Mertine, Jordan O’Connor, Sonia Smith, Olivia Wesolowska, Lorna Breen and Donna Buckley.

Moyvane included Mirek Jesko, Kevin Hudson, Padraig Hanrahan, Matthew Moore, Marie Kennelly, Aoife Bowler, Aoife Curtin and Jola Lagan. THE Kerry Badminton Associatio­n’s adult individual programme commences next Sunday with the annual November Handicap competitio­ns which caters for all divisions. This is just one of the two days on the Kerry Badminton programme that all 5 divisions within the County will compete together on the one day. The second one will be in three weeks, December 4 which is called Tournament Sunday.

For Sunday next divisions 4 and 5 will commence at 2 pm. For many of these division 5 players, who are beginners to the sport, this will be their first taste of competitiv­e badminton. Division 3 will commence at 3.30pm with the combined programme for the division 1 & 2 players to take court at 4pm.

Meanwhile, the Kerry Juvenile badminton season started in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday with 120 children taking parts from all over Kerry in the draw for partners competitio­n U-11 Girls: Beibhinn Sheehy, Dingle, and Jessica O’Loughlin, Kingdom, Castleisla­nd, defeated Stephanie Reid, Annascaul, and Fiona O’Connor, Listowel, 17-21, 21-11, 21-13 U-13 Girls: Deina Vesko, Listowel, and Kayla Getkate, Dingle, defeated Ciara Knightly, Annascaul, and Ava Barrett, Listowel, 21-8, 21-4 U-15 Girls: Katelyn Reid, Annascaul, and Aoife Murphy, Listowel, defeated Laura O’Connor, Killarney, and Molly McElligott, Listowel, 2220, 16-21, 21-19 U-17 Girls: Nicole Lewis, Dingle, and Eilish Brosnan, Kingdom, defeated Jemi John, Kingdom, and Olivia Wesolowska, Killarney, 21-8, 14-21, 21-17 U-11 Boys: Ruadhan Donovan, Annascaul, and Conor O’Keefe, Killarney, defeated Aryton Burke, Kingdom, and Eddie Scully, Killarney, 21-7, 21-11 U-13 Boys: Tomas O’Sullivan, Listowel, and Dara Newsome, Annascaul, defeated Nickolai O’Callaghan, Listowel, and Julian McCormack, Annascaul, 21-19, 21-14 U-15 Boys: Mikey Brosnan, Annascaul, and Christoper O’Donoghue, Moyvane, defeated Jack McElligott, Listowel, and Seamus Knightly, Annascaul, 21-17, 21-9 U-17 Boys: Niall O’Brien, Killarney, and Luc Galvin, Listowel, defeated Luke O’Loughlin, Kingdom, and Armandes Bendaravic­ius, Killarney, 22-20, 20-22, 21-17 Plate winners U-11 Boys: Aidan Fahey, Annascaul, and Ethan Farley, Listowel. U-13 Girls: Ella Sheehy, Dingle, and Maddison Car ter, Listowel. U-15 Boys: James Smith, Killarney, and Cathal Donovan, Annascaul.

The next competitio­n is the Girls and Boys doubles Championsh­ips on Saturday, November 19.

With the clocks now having gone back the hour to winter time there are many people that will be still looking for some past time to pass away those long nights and badminton might be your answer.
