POIGNANT CEREMONY

On Sunday 30th October in Waterville Heritage Iveragh commemorated the double centenary year of two tragedies in Ballinskelligs Bay. In 1916 five Danish seamen died when their ship the Eliezer was washed up on the Inny Strand and four Iveragh men drowned when their small boat overturned intheBay.TheIveraghmenwere James O’Connor, Toormore, Denis McGillicuddy and Thomas Curran of Baslicon and Michael O’Shea, Garryglass.

Also commemorated were the deaths of all others who have died in the Bay over the years, whose deaths were symbolised by the deaths of the nine in 1916 and the death in 1989 of Paddy Seán Fogarty of Murreagh who died at the Inny Strand trying to save the life of his friend Fr. Willie Murphy, who also died. Paddy Seán was posthumous awarded a gold medal in 2010 for his bravery. The search and rescue services of the Bay were also honoured.

The day’s events included a trip to the wreck site of the Eliezer, an ecumenical service in St. Michael’s Church and prayers at the grave of Eliezer crew members. A plaque was jointly unveiled at the promenade, Waterville by the Mayor of Marsal, Denmark; Michael O’Shea, Mayor of Kerry; Julie Carey, daughter of Paddy Seán Fogarty and Tony Donnelly of the search and rescue services.

Certificates were awarded to the search and rescue services, which were present in the Bay during the event, and framed mementos were presented to others. A ringing of the bell of the Eliezer by young Jeppe Seier of Marstal and Kaylin O’Sullivan, great-great granddaughter of Michael O’Shea of Garryglass, brought the ceremony to a fitting close. A booklet on the tragedies and the rescue services was launched and a DVD of the events will be available soon.

SUIRBHÉ

Tá Comhchoiste Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh ag déanamh roinnt taighde faoi láthair mar gheall ar an stádas reatha sa cheantar seo ó thaobh daonra agus cúrsaí eacnamaíochta agus shóisialta de. Beidh torthaí an taighde seo á úsáid againn mar úrlais chun iarrachtaí suantasacha breise a dhéanamh chun infheistiú stáit a mhealladh go dtí an ceantar, agus beidh sé lárnach freisin san obair atá ar siúl againn chun Plean don Ghaeilge a chur le chéile do thréimhse seacht mbliana. Ba mhór againn é dá dtógfá 10 nóiméad chun an suirbhé seo a líonadh, rud a bheidh ina chabhair iontach dúinn. Más é do thoil é, ná líon ach ceann amháin des na ceistneoirí seo in aghaidh an duine; tá fáilte roimh níos mó ná ceann amháin ó ghach tigh. Go raibh míle maith agat as an dtacaíocht seo!

SURVEY

Comhchoiste Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh is undertaking some research at present in relation to the population and the current socioeconomic status of this area. The results of this research will be used by us to make the best cases possible to attract further funding to this area, and it will also form an integral part of the seven-year Irish Language Plan for the area which we are currently working on. We would be really grateful if you would take 10 minutes to complete this survey, which will assist us hugely in achieving these objectives. Only one survey per person please, but as many people as possible from each household completing the survey will be very helpful. Thank you very much for your support.
