Boys U16 Div 1. Gneeveguilla 53 - St. Mary’s 51 (Played 29/10/2016)

Gneeveguilla hosted St. Mary’s in what was the opening game of the season for both teams. This was always going to be a thriller as very little had separated these teams in under 12 and under 14 leagues.

Gneeveguilla lead at the end of the first quarter 15-12, Ronan Collins and Jack Brosnan hitting 3 pointers and Paul O’Leary adding two 2 pointers. St Mary’s were not to be out done in the outside shooting with Daniel Kelly and Garry O’Sullivan adding 3 pointers of their own to keep Mary’s very close.

Gneeveguilla dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters winning both quarters 19-13 and 13-7 to leave the score 47-32 going into the 4th quarter. Strong for Gneeveguilla in these quarters were Daniel Fleming, Lorcan Keane, Patrick Brosnan and Charlie Collins. Good work from Donal Geaney and Ethan Reidy kept the score board ticking over for Mary’s. But the Gneeveguilla defence particularly in this period was key to the final result.

15 points behind going into the last quarter the travelling side was always going to give one last burst and opened the quarter with a fierce intensity and the quick scores they needed to make this a nail biter right to the end. Mary’s pulled the deficit to 1 point with a 3 pointer from Daniel Kelly but Paul O’Leary sinking one of his free shots in the last few seconds to give the home side the victory.

Top scorers for Gneeveguilla were Ronan Collins (15), Paul O’Leary (13)

Top scorers for St. Mary’s were Daniel Kelly (18), Garry O’Sullivan (13)

This game saw St Anne’s at home to Gneeveguilla with both teams looking for their first win of the season. The game got off to a slow start from a scoring point of view with both teams strong in defence. The teams were tied at 2 each and 4 each before Gneeveguilla started to use home advantage to their gain.
