Plenty of brainy fun for grownups too at Kerry Science Fest
THE county is being encouraged to discover the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at a special showcase in the IT Tralee next week.
As part of the inaugural Kerry Science Festival, the Institute of Technology Tralee is hosting a STEM Showcase on November 19.
The free events will be held between 11am and 5pm in the North Campus over the course of the day with activities varying from children’s workshops and entertainment, to graduate opportunities and exhibitions from local companies.
These interactive workshops for children will include: Mathsworld, Lego WeDo, Cell Explorers, Spec in a Suitcase and more and the youngsters are invited to join character ‘Scientific Sue’ as she enters the magical world of Bubbleology teaching some fundamental lessons in physics.
With workshop spaces limited it will be important to book in advance, a spokesperson for the college said.
A career exhibition will introduce individuals to the STEM companies based in the county and provide information about the jobs market. Kerry’s latest online hub for Science and Technology jobs, Kerry Sci-Tech, will be launched at 12.30pm.
Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin of UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics will host a panel discussion with company representatives at 1.30pm. They will discuss the career opportunities available to STEM graduates in Kerry and nationwide.
Girls Hackathon, an initiative for leaving cert cycle girls to get creative with code is also a free event on the day.
Face painting, giant Connect 4 and the Fanzini Brothers “Guido Fanzini’s Impossible Circus” are just some of the free kids entertainment on the day. The Kerry Science Festival takes place from the November 13 to 20 throughout the county.
