Calls for playgrounds at seaside resorts
KERRY County Council is presently working with local community groups to provide playgrounds in several parts of the county, as part of the Ag Spraoi Policy adopted by its Elected Members.
This information was included in a report provided by the council at a South and West Kerry Municipal District meeting last Friday, November 18.
The report was issued in response to a notice of motion by Councillor Michael Cahill.
Cllr Cahill had asked the council to provide playgrounds at all seaside resorts in the county, and cited the success of playgrounds in areas like Rossbeigh, Ballybunion and Ballyheigue.
The council’s report detailed that the playground provision process is ongoing in 11 different parts of the county, though site difficulties have been encountered in two of these areas: Ballylongford and Beaufort.
Cllr Cahill said he welcomed ‘the vast majority of what the report contains,’ but expressed disappointment that there are no plans at present for playgrounds in Kells or Inch, saying “the most used playgrounds in the county are those located at Seaside Resorts, and with the huge success of the Wild Atlantic Way their case is even stronger.”
The Killorglin councillor urged that Kells and Inch be considered by the council going forward.
In its response to Cllr Cahill’s notice of motion, Kerry County Council explained that it had not received any formal approach from a Community Group in Inch for a playground.
The response also stated that the council will assist any such group should they contact Kerry County Council directly.
