Good news for Fenit
THERE was plenty of positive news about the future of Fenit Harbour and Kerry Airport at the council’s budget meeting.
Chief Executive, Moira Murrell said the implementation of a feasibility study to develop Fenit Port would soon be put in place, citing the route between Tralee and Fenit “as critical for this county” in terms of economic potential.
Ms Murrell added the road between Fenit and Tralee represented more than just one linking two destinations; it has the potential to become an “economic corridor” if properly explored.
The dredging of Fenit Harbour was also raised, with council management announcing its intention to apply for a new 10-year licence to carry out dredging works, instead of a 3-year one.
“We will be making a submission to the department. Land acquisition will also be explored. An extension of the licence will be more expensive, but it’s far more efficient and this location has real economic potential.”
Meanwhile, at Monday’s full council meeting, Cllr Toiréasa Ferris tabled a motion calling on management to examine the suitability of harbours in the county for the landing of cruise liners. In response, council management said Fáilte Ireland has commissioned a ‘Cruise Strategy’ to examine the size and scale of the potential for tourism. The report is to be finalised early in 2017.
In addition, management reiterated its commitment to examine the expansion of Fenit Harbour and will seek consultants to undertake a full feasibility study and capital cost appraisal.
