The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Trio’s art exhibition helping us let go of fear - by post!
‘AND Gently Letting Go’ is an exhibition of diverse art work created by visual artists Rebecca Carroll, Noreen Breen and Susan Hitching currently running in St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre, Listowel.
This collaborative exhibition which includes paintings, installations, poetry, embroidery, assemblage and print, explores the themes of love, loss, identity and the process of letting go. Fear, which is represented with images of hares in some traditions, has been transformed into fluid, positive artwork by Susan Hitching. An interactive installation by Noreen Breen allows the individual to write down what it is that they fear and then ‘post’ it into the box provided, thereby identifying the fear and letting it go.
The exhibition was opened by writer and personal development consultant Catherine McGeachy earlier this month with over 100 people attending on the night.
In her opening speech, Catherine explained that in order to let go, the individual “has to experience whatever it is that they have to experience and then move on gently.”
The three artists are part of the art collective Colourful Spirits – North Kerry Art Group. For Rebecca Carroll, the process of creating was an act of love and a reflection of childhood memories of her mother.
Her pieces range from a pillow embroidered with her mother’s handprint – just like her mother embroidered her and her seven siblings’ handprints when they were children – to the culinary skills her mother taught her, represented in an abstract painting entitled “Marinating Love”.
The exhibition is running until the end of the month with many of the pieces available to purchase.
