Shops shelter their trolleys but not the disabled

-

SUPERMARKETS provide rain covers for their shopping trolleys but fail to provide shelter for people using disabled parking spaces, according to Una Baker whose daughter Tamara died last December after suffering from scoliosis.

And this is just one of the unseen hurdles faced by the disabled and their parents in their daily lives. Una is keenly aware of these challenges and motivated by this understanding she rallied the community to organise a fundraising event last week in Halla na Feothanaí. The Céilí was organised to raise funds to contribute to the cost of providing physiotherapy treatment for Hannah Falvey, the young Annascaul girl who has a rare condition called Rhetts Syndrome.

Businesses, musicians and the broader community got behind her call and the support from throughout West Kerry was strong.

Musicians Eoin Knightly, John Joe Dorgan, Micheál Ó Cinnéide, and John Fitzgerald povided the music for the knees up. “They played excellently and I would like to thank them sincerely” said Una. “We raised €2,315 on the night and €100 worth of tickets were bought by Raidió na Gaeltachta, making a total of €2,415.”

Una would like to thank the following restaurants and businesses: Doyles of Dingle, The Half Door, Ida’s, Deirdre’s Café, Murphy’s Pub, Dingle Bay Hotel, Benner’s Hotel, Skellig Hotel, Supervalu, Gerry Kennedy Butchers, Beauty Lounge, Magda’s Hair Salon, Spar Castlemaine, Horan’s Healthfood Tralee, Grand Hotel Tralee, Castleisland Motor Factors, MotherCare, Harvey Norman, Debenhams, Barrack Height bar, Foley’s in Inch, Gloria Jean’s Coffee shop, Manor West, Boots, Sam Mc Auley’s Chemist and CH Chemist.
