The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Caherdaniel magazine hits shelves
THE latest edition of the Caherdaniel Parish Magazine is on sale now and, as ever, it’s an excellent read.
The magazine – now in its sixth edition – is a labour of love produced by an 11 strong committee who are helped out by a small army of writers, contributors, photographers and proofreaders.
The result is an exceptionally high quality magazine which would put many commercial publications to shame.
The highlight of this year’s edition is a feature interview with GAA legend Mick O’Dwyer who speaks of his family ties to Caherdaniel; how he spent much of his youth in the parish even and how Charlie Haughey unsuccessfully tried to coax him into a life in politics.
There’s also the fascinating story of Castlecove priest Fr Patrick Galvin’s missionary career; a look at the close links between Derrynane and Adare’s Dunraven dynasty and a in depth feature on the achievements of Kerry U14 ladies captain, local girl, Síofra O’Shea.
Leading RTE documentary maker Seán Mac Giolla Phádraig has also used the magazine to appeal for information on prominent War of Independence era figure Albina Broderick/Gobnait Ní Bhruadair – who ran a hospital near Castlecove – for a documentary he is planning.
That’s all in addition to comprehensive coverage of all the events that shaped life in the parish over the last 12 months.
With this year’s magazine selling like hotcakes – and being sent out across the world – preparations are already well underway for next year’s edition.
The magazine – which costs just €8 – is available in most shops and businesses in the greater Caherdaniel, Castlecove and Waterville area. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy.
