The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Killorglin’s achievements are self-funded by its own, hardworking community
THERE’S often a perception out there that when a town is looking as sprightly as Killorglin is right now that the local authority is investing a great deal of money. But what people might not realise is that take for example this year’s Christmas lights and ESB in Killorglin. These are embellishments to the town that are paid for solely by the traders/Chamber Alliance, and even the Christmas tree this year is kindly sponsored by Nick Foley of Killarney Christmas Trees.
The folowing is a brief overview of some important projects in Killorglin: • Over 5000 voluntary hours dedicated by the
Chamber Committee members this year. • Christmas in Killorglin’s Live Crib, built and delivered to Library Place – great plans to expand the experience next year. • Iveragh Road remedial road works completed by KCC in June with minimum interruption to the Town due to intervention with Chamber. • Remedial road works completed outside Nick’s on upper Bridge Street and the Mill Car Park was upgraded and finished. This came about due to pressure from the Chamber. • Working with Killorglin Tidy Towns, the
Diaspora Lady statue was unveiled in October (this has gained huge approval from the community). • Killorglin Tidy Towns ‘upcycled’ 11 Teak boxes and planted them with Birch Trees and had a greater variety of Flower arrangements in the summer. • Killorglin Tidy Towns gained 24 points in the
National Tidy Towns Competition in the past
2 years (national average is c. 5 points P.A). • €120,000 awarded for a loop walk at Laharn – great plans for a town park by the river on Annadale Road in the next 3 years. • Killorglin Pipe Band going from strength to
strength. • Killorglin Keane’s SuperValu Basketball Men’s
Division 1 is top of the National League.
