FLOWER ARRANGNG

Breda Nagle (florist) will give a talk on Christmas flowers and Christmas flower arranging in the Heritage Centre Scartaglen on Wednesday December 14th at 7pm. Everyone welcome. This event is being organised by Scartaglen Ladies Group.

DEATH

The death occurred recently of Nora Lenihan (nee Kerin) of Counguilla and formerly of Knockrour East. The late Nora who was in her 90th year was pre-deceased by her husband Denis. The deceased is survived by her sons Freddie, Denis and Michael and by her sister Mary, nieces, nephews, grand-children and extended family. Burial took place in St. Michael’s Cemetery Killeentie­rna. May She Rest in Peace.

CAKE SALE

Scartaglin Childcare Centre’s Annual Christmas Cake Sale will take place in the Centre on this Sunday, December 11th commencing at 11am. This is a very important fundraisin­g event for the centre and all local support will be very much appreciate­d. The Centre will be selling fabulous Homemade X-mas Cakes, Puddings, Mince Pies, Breads and lots more goodies, X-mas Trees, Table Arrangemen­ts, Door and Grave Wreaths. Santa will also be here in his Grotto to meet the children. We will have our Door Prize and usual raffles. Come along and join in the festivitie­s at Scartaglen Childcare Centre.

RAMBLING HOUSE

The Christmas Rambling House session at the Heritage Centre in Scartaglin will take place on Monday night next, December 14th commencing at 8.30pm. This get-together will have a very distinctiv­e festive flavour about it. Admission as always is free with a raffle and refreshmen­ts on the night. Get into the Christmas spirit by coming along to this lively session on Monday night next.

AFTERNOON OF PRAYER

The final afternoon of prayer in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Scartaglin for 2016 will be held on Sunday December 18th when Janice and Moss Carrig will again be present. The Rosary will get the prayer afternoon underway as usual at 2.30pm and everyone is welcome.

The reconvened AGM of Scartaglen GAA Club was held in the clubhouse on Thursday night last December 2nd . The following officers were elected for 2017:

HANDED DOWN

The final Handed Down session for 2016 will be held in the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre Scartaglen on this Saturday night December 10th starting at 8pm. The title of this particular programme is ‘Learning from the Master - Nicholas McAuliffe’ and will be presented by Dr Maire O Keeffe . Maire from Tralee but living in Kinvara Co Galway is regarded as one of Co Kerry’s best fiddle players and recieved a PhD from the University of Limerick . In the early nineties she presented radio programmes for RTE radio and has recorded several CDs.

As a former student of Nicholas McAuliffe , Maire will reminisce about going for lessons and learning not only the tunes but the history and provenance and all about who first recorded or played them . This is what Nichloas McAuliffe is renowned for , his knowledge of Traditiona­l music ,it’s tunes and players is legendary and he has always been the man to go to for confirmati­on of facts about the tradition . Nicholas has been teaching music since 1970 and our guests on Dec 10 include some of his former pupils Emma O Leary Scartaglin and Padraig Buckley of Killarney . We will also hear some tunes composed by Nicholas and we also have his playing partner and wife Anne McAulliffe with friends Mary Crowley and John Connolly . Our young musicians are from the Killarney School of Music . We are delighted to welcome Eileen Sheehan Killarney but who was born and raised and went to school in Scartaglin .

An acclaimed poet Eileen will recite some of her poems and this is a first for Handed Down . Eileen has a poem included in the new best seller Best Loved Poems - Favourite Poems from the south of Ireland and we will have a raffle for a signed copy by its editor Gabriel Fitzmauric­e and John Reidy who contribute­d some of his stunning photos to this hardback book which is a must for anyone to have this Xmas. Please be seated by 8pm
