Kerry Minor hurlers receive their All Ireland ‘B’ Championsh­ip medals

THE Kerry minor hurlers received their 2016 All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ medals from outgoing County Board Chairman, Patrick O’Sullivan, at a function on Saturday last. This was Kerry’s fifth title in a row at this level. Kerry on lookout for new Senior Hurling manager

CIARAN Carey has stepped down as manager of the Kerry senior hurling team. He issued the follow- ing statement “Due to increased work commitment­s, I am unable to give the necessary time required to manage the Kerry senior hurling team for the coming season. I wish to thank my management team, the full panel of players and the backroom team for their support and commitment in delivering a very successful 2016 season which resulted in Kerry maintainin­g their Division 1B Allianz League and Senior Championsh­ip status. I also wish to thank the Kerry County Board for their full support and provision of all the necessary backup required to perform the job. Finally, I would like to wish the Kerry players the very best for the coming season’. Kerry begin their 2017 campaign with a Munster senior league game on 8 January. COUNTY Hurling Officer Gerard McCarthy (Causeway) has been returned unopposed to that position for 2017 at the Annual Convention of Kerry County Committee. This will be the last year of his five-year term. LIXNAW have completed the County and North Kerry double at Under-21 level. In the North Kerry U-21 final (Paddy Kelly Cup), played at Lerrig last Saturday, they defeated Causeway by 2-14 to 1-7. ABBEYDORNE­Y’S Darragh O’Connell won a Leinster Club SHC medal with Cuala (Dublin) last Sunday. Cuala play Slaughtnei­l (Derry) on Saturday, February 4 in the All-Ireland semi-final.

For the record, Fr. Martin Casey (Causeway) won three Leinster senior club medals with Buffers Alley (Wexford) in 1985, ’88 and ’92 and an All-Ireland Club in 1989.

In Munster, John O’Grady (Ballyduff) won Munster club hurling medals with Blackrock (Cork) in 1978 & 1979 and followed up with an All-Ireland medal in 1979.
