Another successful year as Kilflynn counts down to Christmas…

-

WHILE Christmas is a time for celebration and indulgence as we look to ease ourselves through those midwinter blues, in Kilflynn, it’s also a time to reflect on what has been another exceptional year for community activism, fun and enthusiasm in the village.

Ever since Kilflynn Community Together was formed just a few years ago, a wave of positivity has swept through the village and seldom does a week pass by that some event doesn’t take place, or gets loaded in the long pipeline of events scheduled to take place in the near future.

2016 included community clean-ups, Enchanted Fairy Festivals, a 1916 commemoration, Halloween parties, improvement works to the village entrance off the N69, and road resurfacing in the village.

There was no shortage of entertainment either and if it wasn’t exclusive appearances by Johnny Cash (aka Fergus O’Sullivan) that we saw, it was talented young musicians, Conor and Daragh Breen, appearing on The Late Late Toy Show. The village also held a summer music festival in August and it’s just been that kind of a year for Kilflynn.

Meanwhile, up the road at St Treasa’s National School, the pupils and their teachers were busy making headlines with a brilliant version of the Mannequin Challenge as they became the first Kerry school to do it. And no review of Kilflynn would be complete without mention of the glorious achievements of the Crotta minor hurlers who won the county championship for the first time.

One of the highlights of Christmas is the Kilflynn Cancer Support Group’s Table Quiz on Wednesday 28th December at 9pm which takes place via simulcast between Parker’s Pub and Herbert’s Bar. It’s not to be missed and since it first started back in 2004 by Fr Pat O’Donnell, it’s evolved into a Christmas tradition that has raised €64,000 for local cancer support services. So don’t miss it! And keep a look out for the Crotta wren boys on the 26th who will be doing the rounds. A children’s Christmas party is also in the pipeline and you can check out the Kilflynn Community Together Facebook page for more info on this.
