WATER

Irish Water has announced that remedial works to upgrade the water treatment plant in Kilgarvan will be completed by December 2017. While a €4.5 million contract has been signed to upgrade the water treatment plant in Kenmare it seems that no money has yet been allocated to Kilgarvan.

The upgrade is necessary to reduce the elevated levels of trihalomethane (THM) above the standard in the Drinking Water Regulations. The upgrade will include total organic carbon (TOC) removal and optimisation of the disinfection system.

Meanwhile residents, who have been buying bottled water for making tea, have noticed that scale has been forming in electric kettles. This is because very often bottled water is hard and contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium. This would be very prevalent in private water supplies in the Ardtully area there the ground is of a limestone nature. Scale build up inside of electrical appliances can reduce efficiency. Although it can be an inconvenience, scale is not harmful to health.
