Pub offers free food to the poor over Christmas

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

THE spirit of Christmas cheer is glowing in Rathmore where a popular watering hole has launched one hell of a generous charity drive - to provide all those in need with a free and hearty Christmas meal.

Connie K’s is making headlines on social media nationally this week after the kind-hearted drive started by staff there struck a chord with thousands.

In a wonderful act of compassion, staff are inviting those who are struggling financially to collect Christmas dinners and lunches at the bar between December 23 and December 25 - in the strictest of confidence.

Connie K barman Jeff Gordon got the idea for the charitable gesture after meeting a woman in the pits of despair over a bill she was unable to pay off promptly:

“I was talking to a woman outside of the bar and she had just come from the post office where she had been paying off her ESB bill. She was always the type of lady that would have paid it off as soon as she got it, but unfortunately, this time, she was quite upset as she did not have the means to pay it.”

“I went away thinking of ways that I could help and the more that I thought about it, the more I realised that she would not be the only person struggling; we see a lot in the media about homelessness and sometimes the struggles can be a lot closer to home than we realise.”

Anyone who could do with the help is urged to contact the bar.

A RATHMORE based bar will go above and beyond their normal call of duty this festive period, as they prepare to donate free lunch and dinners to all those who may be struggling to make ends meet this Christmas,

In a wonderful act of compassion, the staff at Connie K’s bar are inviting those who are struggling, to come to the bar between December 23 to December 25 to collect their Christmas meals, which they can then take home with them to eat as normal.

She was always the type of lady that would have paid it off as soon as she got it, but unfortunately, this time, she was quite upset as she did not have the means to pay it,” said Jeff Gordon, talking to The Kerryman.

“The idea of what we’re doing is that, in reality, there are a lot of parents with children that are struggling so the beauty of our inititative is that the parents can call into the bar and bring the meals away with them and they can have Christmas dinner at home as normal; this way the children need not know that their parents are struggling.”

“Anyone who is in need can avail of this service, no-one will be turned away; we will do our best to facilitate everybody.”

Those wishing to partake can contact the bar at 0879534944, with strict confidentiality for those involved completely assured.
