ST MICHAEL’S FOILMORE LOOK BACK ON A QUARTER OF A CENTURY

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

EVERY club has a story to tell and this year marks 25 years since the founding of St Michael’s-Foilmore GAA Club. To celebrate the important milestone, South Kerry’s newest club will launch a book of its history this Friday, December 30 at The Shebeen Bar at 9.30pm – a venue where the first club meeting was held back in January, 1991.

The publication is all down to the hard work and vision of the club’s Bord na nÓg committee who took it upon themselves to compile the book which features highlights of club life from 1991 to 2016. It’s called, ’25 Years A Growing’ and costs €12 euro with well-known locals, Danny Tim O’Sullivan and Patrick Galvin, lined up to launch the book on the night.

As well as being a self-financed project, sales from the book are vital to cover its overall costs and while €10 goes back to the club, €2 euro from the sale of each copy is to be donated to Pieta House.

James Mike O’Sullivan is chairman of the club’s Bord na nÓg and he explains why it was important to compile the history while important details and special memories are still fresh in the minds of members, players and supporters.

“Very few clubs are as young as we are and all our memories are fresh. The majority of our club members are still with us and it was important to catalogue the history now. Mental health is also an important issue and one that is important in our club. We’re all aware that people need help from time to time, so we decided to make a donation from the sale of the book to Pieta House,” said James.

He added: “The book is a great chronicle of stories and photos and we’re a club who in the past 25 years have played in every standard of championship and league in Kerry football. We’re looking forward to a great night of reminiscing and catching up with old friends from the past 25 years. Everyone is welcome to The Shebeen Bar on December 30th – a house that has always been a great supporter of ours.”
