Wild Atlantic cycle could boost Kerry tourism

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

A NEW international cycle race could soon take centre stage along the Wild Atlantic Way after Cllr Jim Finucane tabled a motion at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council.

Cllr Finucane said the idea behind hosting a major cycle event would enhance the reputation of the Wild Atlantic Way which he said is an asset that needs constant reinvigorating in order to maintain its vibrancy and prosperity with tourists.

Cllr Finucane’s idea follows on the back of an earlier motion calling for Kerry County Council to host a meeting of all of the county councils along the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ with the aim of developing particular strategies based on the common linkage and potential of the western sea face.

“The idea of a ‘Wild Atlantic Way Cycle’ had a very positive response, as did the idea of Fáilte Ireland being contacted regarding sponsorship. The original idea for the cycle was Kevin Finn’s as he has done many cycles over the years to raise money for charity and Kevin discussed the idea with me” said Cllr Finucane.

The councillor also said that if such an event were to be broadcast live on TV, it would further enhance the west of Ireland and he called on council management to lead the way on a proposal with potential to spiral into a high-profile international event.

“The response has been great and I’m assured it’s a concept that is going to be followed up. If all the counties along the Wild Atlantic Way got behind the initiative and generated sponsorship and prizes through some of the companies located in each of the counties, it would make it a very attractive feature.

“This would lead to TV coverage that would be a significant way of reinvigorating the Wild Atlantic Way, vIt would be quite a unique cycle route in Europe and hopefully if it gets the right support there is scope there for it to become a major sporting event,” added Cllr Finucane.
