Fossa reflect on a job well done
THE people behind Fossa GAA are entitled to celebrate after the 2016 they’ve had - and that’s exactly what they did last week at the club’s superbly attended annual social event.
It was time for a breather after a hectic year that saw the East Kerry outfit take its first ever county junior title.
That success on its own would have been cause enough for festivity, but the club also notched up victories in the East Kerry Senior League and the East Kerry Intermediate Championship, as well as promotion to Division Three of the County League.
“We had a great night at the Killarney Avenue, and over 200 people attended to celebrate what’s been an incredible year for the club,” Fossa GAA Chairman Tommy Cronin told The Kerryman.
“It was a particularly great night for the Clifford brothers, with Paudie picking up the Senior Player of the Year prize and David winning our Young Player of the Year award,” he added.
For David Clifford, touted as one of the best young talents in Gaelic Games, there was further cause for celebration. The 17-yearold won All-Ireland titles with both the Kerry minor team and St Brendan’s Killarney this year, and the social coincided with yet another prize for the young man.
David’s delightful solo-effort in the All-Ireland minor final against Galway, where he raced away from Seán Mulkerrin before hitting the top corner of the net from a tight angle, was voted TG4’s ‘Cúl na Bliana’ for 2016. His last-minute cracker against St Pat’s Maghera in the Hogan Cup final had also been nominated.
“David’s had a brilliant year, and I don’t think anyone was too surprised to see him win Fossa’s Young Player of the Year on the night,” Tommy said.
