Killorglin Pantomine group back for 54th year

- By TADHG EVANS

“MAKE sure to come along for music, dancing, craic, and spectacular costumes that are better than anything you’d get in a West End Musical!”

With a line like that, it’s hard to say no to Declan Mangan, producer and scriptwriter of Killorglin Pantomine Group’s upcoming production of Robin Hood.

The word remarkable is thrown around liberally these days, but its a tag that can be safely applied to this pantomine group’s history.

“We started these shows back in 1958, and this year’s pantomine is our 54th; it’s my pleasure to say I have acted in all 53 pantomines to date, and I will assume the role of the dame for this year’s production” Declan says with warm pride.

“Over our many years, we’ve performed in Dublin, Cork, and indeed on RTÉ, and now we’re looking forward to our latest run at the CYMS in Killorglin.”

The 2017 schedule starts with 3pm matinees on January 21 and 22, with night-time pantomines scheduled from January 25 through to 28. The Killorglin run will end with a 3pm matinee on Sunday 29.

“Over the years our pantomines has raised some €75,000 for good causes, and this year we’ll raise money for Saint Joseph’s Home, Killorglin,” Declan told The Kerryman.

“But in the last two years I’m afraid to say our shows have run at a loss. Tickets for our matinees and Saturday January 28 cost €13, with all other night time shows priced at €15.”

“I’d encourage everyone to get behind our Killorglin shows, and our finalé at the INEC on Sunday February 5. It’s important to get behind such a great cause, and indeed the tradition that goes with our group.”

Martin Hurley of Tralee is the pantomine’s musical director, and one of some 100 people involved with the production - including a few Killorglin kiddies who’ ll appear in several mucisal pieces.
