GLENFLESK RUN TO KEEP BUS ROLLING

‘AND THERE’S MORE TO COME’ SAY ORGANISERS OF FIRST 5K FUN RUN

- BY TADHG EVANS

‘GLENFLESK ag Rith’ has proven tremendously successful since it first got registered local GAA members out and running six years ago.

So, when they decided to organise a 5k Fun Run ‘Run for the Bus’ in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, it was inevitable they would draw a crowd.

And so it proved on Sunday, as 600 hardy runners took the track at Glenflesk’s GAA field, raising just over €10,000 for the Health Link Bus in the process.

Glenflesk ag Rith’s Breda Lynch was thrilled with how well Sunday’s run went, and she explained to The Kerryman that this is only the start of their efforts to keep the crucial bus motoring between Kerry and Cork.

“We got a great turnout for what was the first ever staging of this event, and we hope to get involved in similar efforts for the bus over the coming year,” she said.

“My daughter Leah was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last November and has been receiving treatment, so that was part of what inspired us to organise this run and get behind the charity.

“But cancer is something that affects everyone either directly or indirectly, and the bus travels through Glenflesk and is a similar sight to everyone in the parish. I think that’s why so many people got behind us on Sunday,” she added.

With future events to be scheduled over the next while, Breda was confident that Sunday’s success can be backed up with further good work in the months ahead.

The current Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus was purchased in 2013, and the free service brings its users to Cork University Hospital every day outside of public holidays.

The service serves Kerry and parts of Cork and is offered on a confidential basis. Further information is available at www. kerrycancersupport.com, or by phoning (066) 719 5560.
