New Sé Mo Laoch series kicked off by Chieftains fiddle player Sean Keane

THE fiddle player extraordinaire, Seán Keane kicks off the new series of ‘Sé Mo Laoch on TG4.

‘Sé Mo Laoch is the longest running documentary music series on TG4 and it celebrates heroes of Irish traditional music.

Now in its eighth series since it started in 2001 it will return to our screens each Sunday night at 9:30pm from February 26th on TG4.

The list of heroes celebrated in the series this year includes the man who put Michael Flatley on stage for the first time; the female star of the Ballad boom in the 1960s; the queen of the tin whistle, the man who put lucrative into Sliabh Luachra music; a man who has six grammy awards and a man who is known as the king of street music.

The full list of programmes is in chronological order as follows: Seán Keane, Fiddle, February 26th; Mary Bergin, Whistle, March 5th; Jackie Daly, Accordion, March 12th; Kevin Henry, Flute, March 19th; Ann Mulqueen, Singer; March 25th and Antóin Mac Gabhann, Fiddle, April 2nd.

This is series number eight of Sé Mo Laoch which was first broadcast in 2001.

It is a documentary music series which focuses on heroes of traditional music who have made a significant contribution to their art.

In each programme we get an overview of the person’s life and musical journey as well as contributions from musical colleagues and contemporaries.

Some of the contributors in this series include: Michael Flatley, Liz Carroll, Paddy Glackin, Kathleen Loughnane, Mike McGoldrick, Tony McMahon, Liam O’Connor, Caitlín Nic Gabhann and Joe Burke.

‘Sé mo Laoch will be screened on TG4 from Sunday February 26th at 9.30pm. The new series will be launched at 7pm on Saturday, February 18th at a special screening to be attended by Jackie Daly and Seán Keane in the Montenotte Hotel, Cork as part of Gradam Ceol weekend.

The series is produced by Sibeal Teo for TG4. Producer is Niamh Ní Bhaoill and the Director is Ciarán Ó Maonaigh.

Sé Mo Laoch will be broadcast each Sunday at 9:30pm on TG4 repeating each following Wednesday at 7:30pm. Segments of the special on Jackie Daly were filmed in Scartaglin and facilitated there by Scartaglin Heritage Centre, Lyons’s Bar and Handed Down co-founder, PJ Teahan. It had a special screening in the Malbay Hotel during Willie Clancy week and it provides an excellent portrait of the artist from boyhood to the revered gentleman he has become.
