Know your entitlements and grow old with peace of mind

-

GETTING on in years can be as enjoyable, reflective and momentous as it can be challenging which is why it’s good to be aware of the entitlements and services available to you. Support services come under the remit of various bodies from the Department of Social Protection, Local Authorities and Voluntary Organisations and, depending on the type of service/query you have, can be made to the relevant body.

For example, Age Action Ireland, Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Age & Opportunity, Carers Association and Citizens Information are just some of the voluntary groups available that can assist with everything from health, finance and social issues. Another invaluable voluntary asset for the elderly are local Community Centres. These have really spiraled in recent years and if you haven’t already been in touch with a centre closest you, then we strongly recommend you do so as they offer an excellent range of recreational, social and advisory services.

Likewise, the local Social Protection office can give advice on Home Care Packages which contain a set of services designed to assist older people so they can be cared for in their own home, such as home help hours, nursing and therapy services, information on rehabilitation services in a nursing home after an illness or period of recovery. A Home Care Package also offers entitlement to many other everyday aspects of care in the home such as commodes, walking aides and wheelchairs.

The Local Authority also plays a vital role in providing housing and accommodation for the elderly and people who require home interior alterations due to incapacity issues, should seek their advice. People can avail of the Housing Aid for Older Persons Scheme which was set up to make the necessary home alterations to improve conditions for people aged 66 years and over. This service can include anything from structural repairs and improvements in the home, to cleaning and general garden maintenance. Priority is also given to those in most need so, for example, say you’re about to leave hospital or a nursing home and you need some essential alterations to make life easier in your own home, the Local Authority can assist you in this regard.

Sometimes seeking the right information about a query specific to your needs can be daunting. But do be sure to ask and if you’re still not sure, ask again. If you are entitled to a service that helps make life a little easier, then pursue it. There are many people out there from family, local politicians, your GP, citizens’ advice and voluntary groups only too willing to help you. So ask and be sure to enjoy your old age, gracefully and with purpose. Finding the right place starts with finding the right advice

Rehabilitation, step down and convalescent care, patient acute services, day services, community services, home care and home helps are among the list of services provided by the HSE for older people in the community. Finding the right place is about finding the right advice as looking for such services can be a daunting task for people, especially as need for them often comes on us suddenly in life. Thankfully, there’s a good mix of public and private services available across the county which the HSE can help advice on.

To find out about the range of services you are entitled to, their location and how to access them, you should first contact the Public Health Nurse at your nearest Health Centre who will be best placed to address your queries. Also, chat to your local GP about any concerns as he/she will be aware of medical history and medical needs and might be able to offer sound advice and suggestions. Finding what’s right for you or a loved one requires you to be vocal and persistent with queries. If you don’t understand fully the range of options available to you, don’t be afraid to ask again. Stress and anxiety pays no heed to how old or young we are and therefore you must ensure your mind is put at rest when seeking advice.
