Spa set dancers claim another All-Ireland title

- Jack Hennessy

MORE All-Ireland Scór glory has come to the Kingdom, and Spa in particular, as the East Kerry GAA club claimed gold in set dancing competition at the All-Ireland Scr na nÓg finals at the spectacular Waterfront Theatre in Belfast last Saturday.

It was a day to remember for Spa who were representing their club and county in both Set Dancing and Quiz. The finals were a marvellous occasion and the full house, including a decent contingent that travelled up from Killarney, was treated to a fantastic day of the very best of music, song, dance and theatre.

Spa were involved in the final category of the evening in the Set Dancing competition and when the winner was announced the huge Kerry contingent cheered on their Set Dancing champions who collected their fourth national title dancing the ‘Lough Isle’ set and giving an unerring performance.

In fact, Spa were the only Munster club to bring any honours down south.

Padraig Duffy, General Secretary of the GAA, presented the All-Ireland medals and as each member of the dancers came forward to accept their medals there was great scenes of joy among dancers and supporters alike.

The winning Spa Set Dancers are Kianan O’Doherty, Liam Spillane, Gary O’Sullivan, Cian O’Sullivan, Erin Holland, Meghann Cronin, Aine Brosnan, Orlaith Spillane

The Quiz took place earlier in the day with 28 counties taking part with Kerry represented by Spa through Louise Fleming, Daniel O’Sullivan, James Lynch and Kianan O’Doherty, who were going for a three in a row of National titles. Unfortunately for the Killarney club it proved a bridge too far on this occasion, as they finished a very credible fourth behind winners Donegal.

It is also worth a mention that the quiz master for the day was multiple All Ireland football champions Valerie Mulcahy from Cork.

Meanwhile, the county finals of Scór Sinsear will be held in the Mhuire Gan Smal, Presentation Primary Castleisland this Saturday at 8pm where the District Boards from around the county will be striving to put their club through to the Munster finals in Cappamore, county Limerick on Saturday, April 8.

Saturday’s competitions will be preceded by the Question Time at 6pm. The format for Question Time in Scór has changed and now consists of a one night table quiz. The outright winner will go directly through to the All Ireland Finals in the Waterfront Theatre, Belfast on Saturday, May 6 where all 32 counties will do battle for the All Ireland title.
