Farranfore branching out for tree week
NATIONAL Tree Week runs from March 5-12 and the pupils and staff at Farranfore National School sure know how to turn over a new leaf when it comes to planting trees. John Mcloughlin, Chairman of the Tree Council of Ireland, also helped plant trees at the school which will last the test of time.
The Tree Council has planted thousands of trees in Kerry over the past 30 years in association with Terry O’Connor of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association. The Farranfore School has a deep-rooted connection when it comes to planting trees, which Mr Mcloughlin says makes for an important and attractive amenity at the school.
“It is necessary to continue planting trees to replace old and decaying ones. Like us, trees grow old and die and we must replace the legacy of the trees we inherited from our predecessors,” said Mr Mcloughlin.
The tree council also cited the storms of recent years as a contributing factor in the rapid decay of trees and that it’s important for people to get involved and planet the next generation of trees that will add beauty to our landscape.
The aim of National Tree Week, backed by Applegreen, is to encourage schools, families and communities to plant trees and to engage in tree activities.
Meanwhile, a tree planting also took place at Firies NS and on Thursday there will be a planting at Faha NS organised by SWS Forestry.
