Wins in Antrim and Cavan for handballers

- Padraig Harnett

TRAVELLING the length of the country proved be no obstacle to Dominic Lynch as the handball star qualified for yet another All-Ireland final.

The Glenbeigh player was in Belfast to take on Sean Devine of Antrim in the singles semi-finals of the Masters 40x20, and it turned out to be an easy win for Lynch taking both games 21-4. Lynch was delighted with the win after the long journey.

“It was along way to travel but well worth it to qualify for another All Ireland final. Credit to Sean he tried hard but thankfully I was in very good form and got off to quick starts in both games. Once I built up the lead I knew he was not going to catch me. Ollie Ryan from Carlow will be my opponent in the final and this should be a good battle. It is set for Saturday March the 18th in Kingscourt in Cavan so hopefully there will be another All Ireland heading to Glenbeigh!,” Lunch said.

The underage 40x20 All Ireland singles semi-finals were also down for decision in Kingscourt at the weekend. In the U-17s last four Ballymac’s Dara Keane had a comfortable 21-1, 21-12 win over Caolan McCartan from Tyrone.

Unfortunately Glenbeigh’s Sean Quirke narrowly missed out on the All Ireland U-14 singles final as he lost to Monaghan’s Tiernan O’Rourke 15-10, 15-14 despite a great effort to take the game to a deciding set.

In Broadford this Thursday Dominic Lynch and John Joe Quirke will play Cork’s Colm Jordan and Alan O’Dwyer in the Munster Final of the 40x20 Over-35 Doubles at 7.30pm.

In the Munster Junior B 40x20 doubles final Kerry’s Cian Counihan and Danny Riordan face Tipperary’s David O’Brien and Declan Gleeson at 7.30pm.

Next Saturday in Cappagh, Co Limerick Lynch and Jack O’Shea face Colm Jordan and David Walsh from Cork in the preliminary round of the All Ireland 40x20 Senior Doubles.
