LISPOLE BROTHERS EYE ANOTHER TITLE

Ó CATHASAIGH BROTHERS IN RUNNING FOR ‘IRELAND’S TRADDEST FAMILY’ AWARD

- By TADHG EVANS

THE Ó Cathasaigh family from Lios Póil have taken Ireland by storm – yet again.

Brothers Proinnsias and Máirtín Ó Cathasaigh sent a video to RTÉ not too long ago in the hope of winning The Ray D’Arcy Show’s ‘Ireland’s Traddest Family’ Competition.

Last week, RTÉ announced that the Lios Póil brothers had qualified for the final six of the contest, and the National Broadcaster shared the lads’ video entry last Wednesday (March 1) ahead of this coming Saturday night’s final. The 80-second clip has netted 78,000 views since its release, and while not even a minute-anda-half long, the brothers cram the clip with concertina, piano, tin whistle, Irish dancing, whistling, lilting, bodhrán, and sean-nós singing.

“They only recorded it last minute! People kept at them to enter, so they got me to film it in their music room, and we sent it off then, not thinking we’d hear any more about it” their mother Margaret told The Kerryman.

“We got some shock last week when we heard they’d made the last six. We weren’t expecting it, but there’s been great excitement ever since, and we’ll hope for the best now!”

Margaret said ‘she’d have a job counting’ all the instruments the brothers can play, and it would be tougher again to list off all the accolades they’ve won at national and international level through their singing, dancing, acting, and more.

“Proinnsias started Irish dancing at twoand-a-half, and Máirtín’s first day on stage was in the Kerry Community Games Choir Competition when he was four – you might remember that yourself because he was wearing an old blue waistcoat of yours!” Margaret joked.

“The judges will choose the final three on Thursday (March 9), so hopefully we’ll qualify to appear on the Ray D’Arcy Show on Saturday night, March 11.”

Judges are understood to be keeping their eyes on how each entrant’s video has performed with the public. You can share the brothers’ video by searching https://www.facebook.com/RTEOne/videos/1435890376484798/
