Funding for Kerry angling initiatives

- By TADHG EVANS

ANGLING initiatives organised by Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club and Waterville Lakes and Rivers Trust will receive funding from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) as part of its 2017 Sponsorship Scheme.

The IFI awarded €250 and tagging kits to Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club for its upcoming ‘Tag-a-Ray’ Competition, while €250 will go to Waterville Lakes and Rivers Trust to support the Lough Currane Seatrout Championship.

The two-day Tag-a-Ray event will take place on May 13 and 14, and more than 50 participants from all over Ireland are expected to compete in the Tralee Bay competition. The aim of the contest is to catch and tag stingrays and undulate rays in Tralee Bay, where the rare species is plentiful at that time of year.

The club has set boat fees at €80 for both days, while shore fees stand at €30 for the weekend. You can obtain more information by phoning the club at (087) 9924002.

The Lough Currane Seatrout Championship will take place in September, and it is thought that more than 50 domestic anglers will compete.

Aside from financial support, the Inland Fisheries Ireland Sponsorship Scheme can also provide resource support for initiatives by providing staff to help at events where resources allow.

More information on the Sponsorship Scheme and other funding opportunities provided by the IFI is available from www.fisheriesireland.ie/funding.
