OPENING A NEW CHAPTER AT GAELSCOIL FAITHLEANN
THE children, parents and staff of Gaelscoil Faithleann, Killarney were in jubilant form on Friday as poet and children’s author Gabriel Fitzmaurice was on hand to officially open their new school library.
The library grew the combined efforts of parents and staff. The space it uses was fitted out using upcycled materials where possible, and a parent in the school brightened up its walls with murals, a ‘reading tree’, and a ‘reading throne’ both reading and story-telling. The children themselves also played their part, painting ‘book covers’ during the decoration process.
Speaking at the launch, Principal Prionsias MacCurtain said: “We now have an amazing library which the children love. This is a wonderful new resource for the school where children can come and relax and read. All our children will look forward to their library slot every week.
“This will create enthusiastic young readers and writers for years to come and is a resource that will be accessible to the whole school community. It’s the fruition of parents and staff working together on a project to enrich the education of the school children,” he added
Parents Council Chairperson John Bowler added that “The library is a wonderful facility for the school’s pupils, and an initiative the Parents Council were very happy to support.”
As part of the launch pupils took part in a Book Report competition which was supported by Eason’s Killarney, who donated prizes to each class and also judged the competition.
The winning entries will be displayed in Eason’s Killarney store.
