- By TADHG EVANS

IRISH Olympian Derval O’Rourke, Kerry Football legend Aidan O’Mahony, renowned dietician Paula Mee, and fitness and performance expert Joe O’Connor will be among the high-profile guest speakers at a Health and Well-being evening next Thursday (April 6) at the Brandon Hotel in Tralee.

Lee Strand and the National Dairy Council will host the event, which will see Deirdre Walsh on MC duty.

Paula Mee, a well-known television and radio personality, will talk to attendees about how good food choices can affect health and well-being positively throughout life.

Speaking ahead of the event, Paula said “Imagine your health as a jigsaw, with lots of small pieces of the puzzle that all come together to create a picture of good health.”

“No single factor- such as activity or food – determines overall health, but these are essential pieces of the overall picture.

“The great news is that you don’t have to completely overhaul your diet to make an impact on health. Small changes, made repeatedly, can have a big and positive effect,”

Nisus Fitness founder Joe O’Connor from RTÉ’s ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’ currently works with Athletics Ireland, Horse Sport Ireland and Limerick GAA, and he will be present to discuss the importance of fitness for health.

He suggests identifying your limiting factors, setting goals and developing a plan to achieve those goals.

“One size does not fit all when it comes to fitness and training,” he said.

“Adopting a fitness regime that somebody else enjoys will not necessarily be one that you will enjoy.”

Famed athletes Derval O’Rourke and Aidan O’Mahony will also be at the Brandon to provide a wealth of expertise.

Since hanging up her spikes after a glittering 12-year athletics career, she has turned successfully to food and fitness business, and she will follow her second cookbook ‘The Fit Foodie’ by demonstrating family recipes at next Thursday’s event.

Aidan is currently studying for a degree in strength and conditioning, and since retiring from Gaelic Football he has continued to push his fitness to the test, dancing his way to glory on RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars.

He will be at hand at the hotel to give his own thoughts on health and well-being.

Doors open at 7.30pm and the event will commence at 8.00pm. Tickets cost €10 and are available from Lee Strand’s office in Ballymullen, Tralee.
