School in high spirits as they close in on record

STUDENTS HELP HIGHLIGHT AWARENESS OF KERRY BASED ARTHRITIS GROUP

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

OVER 560 students from Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee have helped to highlight the plight of those in Kerry who suffer from arthritis by attempting to break the Guinness World Record the largest number of people dressed as ghosts in a single location.

The previous record of 263 ghosts in one location was well and truly beaten on the day but organisers Mary Lucey, her students from her event management class and all the staff and students at the school must now wait an agonisingly long six-weeks to find out if they have completed all the requirements to claim the record outright. Mary is quietly confident about their chances though.

“Tim Barret from the Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland contacted me and he asked if I could arrange some students to help out with an attempt to break the record; his idea was to have the most number of ghosts in one location because he wanted to highlight the ghostly existence that some people with arthritis go through,” said Mary, talking to The Kerryman on Monday.

“I knew that by asking a secondary school to help out, we could be guaranteed numbers and so I approached a teacher in the school Veronica Hunt and she and the school was delighted to be able to help out.”

“Mattress Mick was our guest of honour on the day and we counted every student who entered the hall on the day and we numbered them with markers on their sheets, we had to get them all in line and they then had to stay in place five minutes to get the record.

“We did everything above board and adjudicators will now study the video footage from the day and see if we completed all the necessary items and we are very hopeful that there won’t be an issue,” she said.
